Geography
Modern geography is an all-encompassing discipline that foremost seeks to understand the world and all of its human and natural complexities-- not merely where objects are, but how they have changed and come to be. As "the bridge between the human and physical sciences," geography is divided into two main branches - human geography and physical geography.
It is a 2 year course and made up of coursework and written examinations.
The GCSE in geography is made up of 2 written papers and I piece of fieldwork. The fieldwork is worth 25% of the final mark and essential that students complete it. The written papers are based on both physical and human aspects of geography.

Paper 2 Human

RE & Citizenship
One of our Academy slogans is a quote from the RT REV John Sentamu
The Academy is, "A laboratory of peace, a community of love and a place where Gods justice pervades the whole environment." RE and Citizenship are seen as central to the ethos of DYCA. Aspects of both subjects arise across the curriculum. All of our staff promote good citizenship amongst our students. It is central to our ethos at the Academy in our Mission and DYCA Code. We seek to: Respect others; Respect learning; respect our environment and respect achievement for all. This is precisely in keeping with the aims of RE and Citizenship.
Our RE/Citizenship staff are dedicated to training our students to become responsible citizens who contribute positively to the local, national and international economy, whilst enabling them to explore ideas and beliefs which may not be their personal experience. By so doing, we enable our students to appreciate the need for respect of the beliefs and opinions of others, whilst enabling them also to formulate and consolidate their own.
RE and Citizenship are taught as discreet subjects at both KS3 & 4. There is also a Citizenship strand built into our cross-curricular Humanities Schemes of Work comprising English, History, Geography and Citizenship. Currently AS RS is offered as an option at KS 5 and we are looking at the possibility of offering the new AS level Citizenship expected to come online in 2008. Whilst formal RE lessons are not available to the whole sixth form each student has the opportunity to explore spirituality and moral issues during Form time and Assemblies, which are held each day or weekly respectively.
Sociology
Sociology is the study of the relationship between the individual and society. Have you ever wondered why people behave in certain ways? Who commits crime and why? Do we over-protect our children? How do we become the people that we are? In GCSE Sociology we study the theories and methods used by Sociologists to investigate and understand social behaviour.
Sociology is an exciting subject that challenges your everyday experiences. You will learn valuable skills through many different ways of learning including IT, debating, individual and group research, presentations and critical thinking and writing.
Where will it lead me?
Sociology can be studied at AS and A2 level and also complements many other subjects including Media Studies, English, History, ICT, Health and Social Care. Sociology is also an excellent subject to prepare you for higher education and careers such as Law, the Police, Social Work, Teaching, Nursing, Journalism and Media.
Any career that involves the interaction of people will benefit from sociological knowledge!
