Performing Arts
At Key Stage 3 students learn new skills and build upon them throughout the years. Projects include working with Teacher In Role to discover the secrets of an ancient (and possibly haunted) Manor, assuming the role of an expert medical practitioner to solve the case of a missing school boy, exploring the emotions of children evacuated during World War II, and finding out about stage presence, characterisation and power.
Edexcel GCSE Drama
A practical and creative course that involves a lot of group work, GCSE Drama follows on from drama work you will have done at Key Stage 3. You will develop your acting and improvisation skills to a higher level. You will look at plays in detail, using drama to explore the texts to understand the themes and concepts within them, looking at different ways of bringing a script alive on stage. As well as learning about theatre practitioners and acquiring the skills involved in creating and performing Drama, you will also be able to acquire skills in working with others, problem solving and communication. You will find that Drama will help you feel more self-confident and will prepare you to deal with a range of different situations and people.
Our continued links with the West Yorkshire Playhouse, Leeds Grand Theatre, and a wide range of theatrical practioners ensure a rich variety of theatre trips, visiting artists and practical workshops, enabling all students to have an understanding of the broad opportunities available within the theatre industry.
BTEC Level 2 First Certificate in Performing Arts (Acting)
An intense and hands on specialist work-related course comprising of core and specialist units which cover the knowledge, understanding and competency necessary for employment within the Performing Arts Industry. You will use a range of practical and theoretical techniques, preparing and performing roles as a member of a performing arts company. These skills will be developed and extended through modules such as ‘Performing Scripted Plays’ and ‘Makeup for Stage Performers’.
BTEC Level 3 National Certificate in Performing Arts (Acting)
An intense and hands on specialist work-related course in which you will complete a range of practical and theoretical assignments leading to a variety of performances. You will explore the key principles of acting using a range of techniques, preparing and performing roles as a member of a performing arts company. These skills will be developed and extended through modules such as ‘Film & TV Acting’ and ‘Developing Physical Theatre’. As part of the course you will create a Theatre In Education Company which will research, devise and perform issue based work to local children.
Extra Curricular Provision
At DYCA we produce a variety of shows for assemblies, awards ceremonies and productions. Past shows have included 'Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat', 'Our Day Out', 'Oliver!' and 'Teechers'.

Trips and Events
We regularly offer all Academy students the chance to join us on visits to watch a variety of Drama, Comedy, Shakespeare, Musical Theatre, Ballet and Contemporary dance performances.
Recent visits have included West Yorkshire Playhouse, Bradford Alhambra, Carriageworks Theatre, London’s West End, Leeds Grand Theatre, Whitkirk Arts Guild and Harrogate Theatre.
Several visiting artists and companies work with our students in school, such as West Yorkshire Playhouse, Banner Theatre and Northern School of Contemporary Dance.
Drama Awards
In recognition of all the hard work and fabulous effort our students put into lessons, we present them with Drama Awards. which are badges to be proudly worn, displaying the student's talent.
