Art and Design
Learning to learn is at the heart of art and design education at DYCA, through studying art and design students gain an ability to observe their environment more closely, express and form opinions, suggest ways in which to adapt, change and develop ideas before solving problems independently. Above all the intention is to make learning an enjoyable and worthwhile experience for all students.
At KS3 in Art and Design all students follow a comprehensive course of study which gives students experiences in as many different materials and media as possible, from fine art to sculpture to fashion design. There is a strong emphasise placed upon developing students practical skills as well as teaching the students to appreciate Art through analysing and discussing art works from a range of different times and cultures. Students skills are developed through a series of projects which allow students to gather research, develop ideas, express opinions and generate final outcomes.

In KS4 students study for a BTEC level 2 qualification. Students build upon knowledge and skills learnt in KS3 by working on a series of project based assignments in which media, methods and techniques are looked at in greater depth. The students are able to select from a broad range of specialist assignments including furniture design, graphics and Jewellery. More importance is placed upon developing independent learning skills and students are given opportunities to diversify and develop there own ideas within the frame work of the course.
At KS5 students study for a BTEC level 3 qualification or A level Art and Design. Experimentation and exploration by the individual is at the centre of the work produced at this level. The structure of the courses are designed to enable students to have a more personalised approach to there learning. Students are encouraged to identify specialist areas of the art and design industry they are most interested in and work towards developing portfolios of work which will best enable them to pursue there chosen career pathway. |
