Business Studies

The Business Studies Department at DYCA can offer your two different types of courses that will best suit your learning styles and educational needs.

The first option is the BTEC National Certificate in Business which is a practical, work-related course. You will learn by completing projects and assignments that are based on realistic workplace situations and activities.

The Second option is the Advanced GCE in Applied Business is also a Vocational course, however you will be assessed by exams and course work.

Both courses offer fantastic prospects after completion to enable you to take your chosen career path.

Whichever course you choose, you can be sure that at DYCA you will be offered all the support and encouragement to ensure that you achieve your qualifications.

Your teachers have a wealth of Business experience that they bring into the classroom to help you to understand Business concepts this is also coupled with contributions from key businesses in our area.

BTEC First Certificate in Business

BTEC First Certificates are valued by employers and more usually lead to higher courses at Level 3 (Sixth form). Numerous career paths are associated with business as it is at the core of most modern organisations.

  • BTEC Level 3 National Certificate in Business

    Equivalent to two full ‘A’ levels, the BTEC National Certificate is all coursework based. Over two years you will complete twelve units in order to achieve your qualification, four of which are core units and eight specialist units. The specialist units explore particular topics in depth.

    The Four core units cover the following topics:

  • Exploring Business Activity
  • Investigating Business Resources
  • Introduction to Marketing
  • Effective People, Communication and Information


  • The eight specialist units that we are running this year are:

  • Investigating Recruitment and Selection
  • Exploring Creative Product Promotion
  • Managing a Business Event
  • Exploring Team Development
  • Starting a Small Business
  • Supporting Projects
  • Career Development Planning in Business
  • Improving Performance in the Workplace


  • BTEC National Certificates are valued by employers and lead to career opportunities in business specialisms such as Finance, Human Resources, Management or Marketing, as well as other Business related careers.
    Edexcel Advance GCE in Applied Business

    The Applied GCE in Business is a single award and can be completed alongside a BTEC qualification or equivalent in another subject. Over two years you will complete six units and will be assessed in a variety of different ways. In the first year, you will complete three compulsory units which will lead you to achieve an AS.

    The topics covered in these units are:

  • Unit 1: Investigating People at Work (Assessed by Examination)
  • Unit 2: Investigating Business (Assessed by Coursework)
  • Unit 3: Investigating Marketing (Assessed by Coursework)


  • In the second year you will complete a further three units that will lead you to achieve the full A level. The topics currently selected for study over the second year are:

  • Unit 8: Business Development (Assessed by External Assignment)
  • Unit 11: Impact of Finance on Business Decisions (Assessed by Coursework)
  • Unit 13: Organising an Event (Assessed by Coursework)


  • The qualification will support your progression into further education, training or appropriate employment.
